Embracer Group, formerly known as Nordic Games and THQ Nordic AB, has announced their acquisition of Borderlands developer Gearbox Software. Gearbox Software will be the seventh official operating group, joining the ranks of THQ Nordic, Saber Interactive, Koch Media, DECA Games, Amplifier Game Invest, and Coffee Stain Holding. Embracer Group, already owning over 200 different video game franchises, only continues to grow with the recent addition of Gearbox Software.
Embracer Group will be paying a total of $1.3 Billion USD to fully acquire Gearbox Software. Gearbox Software recently released Borderlands 3, which was published by 2K Entertainment. It was met with good receptions fro both fans and critics in the industry. According to Fortune, Borderlands 3 had sold over 5 million copies in the first five days of it's release, generating over a billion dollars in revenue for publish 2K Entertainment and becoming the fastest selling game in the publisher's history. These accolades earn Gearbox Software it's $1.3 Billion price tag.
In a statement to IGN, a 2K Representative confirms that 2K will retain the publishing rights for the Borderlands franchise, regardless of Gearbox's acquisition to another publish. Their statement reads, "As the proud publisher of the Borderlands franchise, we are happy for our partners at Gearbox and this exciting new chapter for their organization. The merger does not change 2K’s relationship with Gearbox nor our role as the publisher for the Borderlands IP or any other projects we are currently working on with the studio. We look forward to continuing our long-term partnership with this incredibly talented team and delivering many more exciting entertainment experiences to gaming fans around the world.”
It will be some time before we see what Gearbox Software does now that they are apart of Embrace Group, and the future of Borderlands will seem to continue under 2K Entertainment, however the industry is ever changing.
