MineCraft's Nether Update Launches Today

The ever expanding world of Minecraft got even bigger today with the release of the newest update, titled "Way of the Nether". As the title suggest, this update focuses around the Nether. For the uninitiated, the Nether is a parallel dimension to that of the Overworld in Minecraft that can only be accessed through portals created by Obsidian. This dimension is essentially a hell scape home to some of the strongest mobs in the game.

The Nether was always a "high level" area of the game, as the requirements to enter the nether is creating a portal using the strongest material in the game. The Nether is also home to Nether Fortress, which contain powerful mobs and materials needed to enter "The End".

This newest update to the game is one of the biggest updates to the game yet. A full list of every aspect of the update can be found on Mojang's website here. Here are some of the bigger takeaways.

  • 4 New Biomes: Warped Forest, Crimson Forest, Soulsand Valley, and Basalt Deltas.

  • Nether Wastes: Original Nether Biome is now referred to as Nether Waste.

  • Biome Fog: A fog like area inbetween Biomes to blend them together.

  • New Mobs: Piglins, Hoglins, Striders, Zombified Piglins, and Zoglins.

  • Ruined Portals: Remains of Nether Portals found in both the Overworld and Nether.

  • Blackstone: A new stone material similar to Cobblestone.

  • Respawn Anchor: An item used to create a respawn point in the nether charged by glowstone.

  • Netherite: A new Material stronger than Diamond, Netherite and Netherite materials float in lava, work faster and longer than Diamond, deal more damage, is tougher and has longer durability, and have higher enchantment values. Nethertie Armor also reduces Knockback.

  • Target Block: A Redstone signal gets emitted through the block, the closer an arrow is to the center the stronger the emitted signal is.

  • Soul Speed: A new enchantment that negates the effect of walking in Soul Sand.

  • Dozens of New Blocks: New blocks were added for each of the new biomes previously listed, as well as dozens of way to go about crafting them.
