Rainbow Six Coming to Xbox Series X with Cross Play/Cross Progression

The News comes to us by way of Windows Central, where it’s been stated that Ubisoft’s massively successful title, Rainbow Six: Siege will be making its way on to next generation hardware.

In the interview with Windows Central’s Editor Matt Brown, Rainbow Six Siege Game Director Leroy Athanassof says, “Why I can't give you a date is because those dates are, in the end, on the people doing the next-gen consoles, What I can tell you is that we are going to be on [the consoles] from launch. When they will release the consoles; but it's up to them to agree that. For Siege, our target is to be available right at launch.

Athanassof goes on to speak about Rainbow Six Siege on PS5 and Xbox Series will have cross generation play. This is designed to bridge the generation gap between the two generations of consoles. This of course means those playing on Xbox One will still be able to matchmake with those playing on Xbox Series X, and vice versa. This will prevent fracturing the dedicated community Ubisoft has amassed through the game’s life cycle.

On top of cross generation play, Ubisoft plan on adding Cross Progression, meaning players who plan on making the upgrade in the next generation can carry over any and all progress they have already made previously. Ubisoft hopes to make the Cross Progression feature work across multiple ecosystems, meaning players can bring their save with them regardless of platform. Players who played on PS4 won’t have to be tied down to just the PS5 version, they can bring their saves with them should they choose to upgrade to the Xbox Series X, or PC, or vice versa.

The big takeaway with the interview however is Athanassof’s comments on Cross Play between consoles. In the interview, Athanassof says, “Again, this is more a discussion between Microsoft and Sony. We would love to be fully cross-play — have Xbox players matchmaking against the PlayStation players. We are ready to support that. And hopefully, this will happen because as I said, it's a general move in the industry, and there is nothing that can prevent that. It's just a matter of time before it happens.”

Should Ubisoft be allowed to add Console Cross Play for Rainbow Six: Siege, it would be a massive influx of players in matchmaking. Not only will they get a flood of new players during the launch of next generation hardware, but with already established cross generation play, cross platform play will give the game another huge breath of life. The game is currently doing amazing, and support for it continues even today as two new operators were announced for the next season. The game can only continue to grow and if everything works in Ubisoft’s favor; Cross Play, Cross Generation, and Cross Progression will have Siege be juggernaut of an IP come this holiday season.
